<image:caption>The first Eye Camp was set up in Sohrab Goth, Sindh, Pakistan, in January of 2010, where 137 patients had shown up, most of them children, in need of care. Since then, the N.A. Sher Foundation has held 5 more Eye Camps, aiding a total of more than 2,000 patients. These cataract removal surgeries are performed by Dr. Sultan Ali, NASF Medical & Health Director, and his team of doctors.</image:caption>

They would use desks as chairs and sometimes use benches that students sat on to rest their feet while teaching classes. Because of this, many students would either have to stand or sit very crowded on other benches. The Government High School has also received a refurbished library, completed with books, from the NASF. The library is named the “Sher’s Den." “Sher” in Punjabi, their native tongue, means “lion”. The school, which is an over 125 year old all-boys school, is the alma mater of Dr. Sher, his father and grandfather. In 2008, the N.A. Sher Foundation provided computers for the school also, starting a computer lab.</image:caption>

Over 1,000,000 homes were swept away by the raging waters, leaving over twenty million homeless. Many lost livestock and other possessions in the floods. Surgeon Dr. Sultan Ali, Medical Director for the NASF, led a team of doctors setting up medical camps in five different locations throughout Pakistan. There, they treated over 600 patients afflicted with waterborne, skin, and respiratory diseases free of charge. The N.A. Sher Foundation also set up a tent city, donating 25 tents as temporary housing, and 100 mosquito nets. They also provided 4,000 syringes, 2,000 disposable gloves, medical gauze, and other medical materials.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Vision - Our Mission</image:title>
<image:caption>To promote health, education, humanities and peace in South Asia and beyond. Our Vision We, the N.A. Sher Foundation, are dedicated to see a society in which humans achieve the best level of health care and education by exercising their basic human rights, such as freedom of choice, speech, religion, and the right to due process in a community. Our Objectives We strive to create an environment in which people achieve freedom and exercise their individual choices. Our ultimate goal is not only to provide services for the immediate need, but also to create a sustainable system so that members of the society can utilize the tools we are giving them to eventually solve problems on their own. In order to facilitate this process, we maintain the following objectives: 1. To educate individuals about their basic human rights and make them aware of existing resources. 2. To improve the quality of education in South Asian countries and beyond. 3. To educate individuals about HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Hepatitis and other diseases, as well as improve maternal health and visual ailments. 4. To promote a gender balance among society. 5. To promote peace, security and democracy in all countries. 6. Empower society through capacity-building training and education in order to meet the challenges of the time. This empowerment will ensure the community understands and actively participates in decision-making that affects their lives, as well as improve their integrity, self-respect and quality of life. Guiding Principles In order to best achieve our goals, the members of NASF have a set of guiding principles that we uphold and follow: 1. We believe in integrity, accountability and responsibility in all of our work, as well as complete transparency in our board and activities. 2. We believe that everyone has equal rights irrespective of sex, race/ethnicity, religion, sect/caste, age or disability. We will not discriminate against any member of society. 3. We will continue to educate ourselves about the areas we are serving to best understand and respect the community’s needs, hopes and fears, especially those of marginalized people and their families. 4. We share equal responsibility in ensuring the care, support and empowerment for the individuals and the communities we work with.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Humanities - Mass Weddings</image:title>
<image:caption>When the floods destroyed many of the villages and homes, many couples had to put their wedding plans on hold. The Nasreen and Alam Sher Foundation held mass weddings for 25 couples from 15 different villages in Pakistan, December 25, 2010. In addition to the ceremonies, the NASF, provided each couple with a bed, bedding, kitchen utensils, fashion jewelry, and a dresser. In traditional South Asian weddings, there are typically three ceremonies, lasting three days. The NASF provided clothing for each of the brides and grooms for each day. They also provided enough food to last the newlyweds a whole month. Each of the brides was given a sewing machine so that they could help with the family income and sew clothes for others. The grooms were given each a brand new bicycle so that they could easily get around. A self-taught social worker, Phandi Faqir, organized many of the activities of the mass weddings. The founders, Dr. and Mrs. Sher were both interviewed by Wish TV, a local Sindhi station.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mexico - Our trip to Oaxaca, Mexico in 2015</image:title>
<image:caption>Our exploratory and fact-finding visit to Oaxaca was a huge success. We met with Carlos Hernandez Topete, co-finder and director of En Via. On a tour we also met a few women who had received loans from En Via. We also visited the orphanage and plan to continue to support it. Alam, Nasreen and Carrie also had the chance to visit the orphanage, Hijos De La Luna also loactaed in Oaxaca. We have collaboratively worked with En Via to initially micro-finance 6 deserving women from surrounding village of Oaxaca.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Mexico - Micro-Finance Loans</image:title>
<image:caption>What is mirco-finance? In developing countries, most people do not have access to credit. EnVia helps these people by giving them a hand-up in starting a self-sustaining business. The women learn how to separate personal and business funds, how to choose what to invest in, and how to repay the no-interest loan. These small (micro) loans help women to be able to market their goods and obtain items such as ovens and refrigeration, transportation, and market fees so that they can begin to earn more money for themselves and their families. Microfinance is known to be an effective way to help families become self-sufficient.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Nasreen and Alam Sher are the founders of this organization. They have known each other since their childhood when they lived in Lahore, Pakistan. They have been happily married since January 1974. In traditional Punjabi love stories, the title of the story is always the name of the couple that the story is about, with the woman’s name always listed first. In the honor of this tradition and his wife, Alam Sher came up with the name of the foundation.</image:caption>
